Our Lodge
Our history and our members
Salus Lodge was consecrated on Friday 14 October 1932, and so we are nearly a hundred years old. Our first members were associated with the insurance industry and used to meet at the Piccadilly Hotel. Salus was the Roman goddess of welfare, health and prosperity - all things that insurers are very fond of!
Over time the Lodge has diversified, and we no longer have any insurers among our ranks. Our brethren are drawn from all walks of life: we currently have accountants, chartered surveyors, facilities managers, IT professionals, laser technicians, lawyers, management consultants, manufacturers, musicians, property investors, security guards and tattoo artists. Our brethren are of all ages: the youngest are in their twenties and the more mature specimens have retired. We live all across England and some live overseas: as long as you can make our meetings in London four times a year then geography is no barrier. One of the delights of Freemasonry is getting the chance to meet a wonderful bunch of people that you might be unlikely to otherwise.
The Salus firing glasses
This tradition began in the eighteenth century. Following toasts, we follow the lead of the Worshipful Master in rapping the firing glasses on the table in a strict rhythm. When we get it right, it sounds like a dramatic volley of gunfire: a stirring staccato drumbeat. When we are not quite on form it is more like a filing cabinet falling down a short flight of stairs.
